I've been trying to stop myself from going off on a rant about this. It worked for a few days.

The amount of negative response to Lana Del Rey makes it seem like people feel like they've
been somehow tricked...or like Lana is a cyborg created with the sole purpose of tricking people
into enjoying her music or being physically attracted to her.

Lana Del Rey used to have a different name. So did a ton of other artists. If MGMT was called
"Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser and three other dudes" the band wouldn't have nearly
as much notoriety because the masses just have to have some image to latch on to. Marilyn Manson
wouldn't have been as popular in the 90's (before he sucked) if he was just called 'Brian Warner.'
Bands and artists create an IMAGE...they do it because they want a vehicle to represent their music.
It helps, and it's fun. People like an image.

Lana Del Rey isn't her real name? OH NO! Kill her!
Lana Del Rey, out of millions of people, was backed by record labels who thought she had talent? KILL HER!
Lana Del Rey...wait...she...oh my god...did the unspeakable and.....HOLY SHIT, SHE CHANGED HER IMAGE?! KILL HER! GOUGE OUT HER EYES! SEND HER BACK TO THE OCEAN FROM WHENCE SHE CAME!

When I first heard the song 'Video Games' I had no idea what she looked like, nor did I give any sort of a fuck. It's not just the song (which was written by someone else. gasp) that's good...because if you had, say, Celine Dion singing it it wouldn't have the emotional resonance that it does when Lana Del Rey sings it.

People also say that it's her only good song. I doubt most of these people have put any effort into hearing any more of her music before they latched onto the 'mainstream' internet sentiment and started hating her, not because of her music but because she altered her appearance in some way. Do people work out to become more physically attractive and sought after by mates? Do females wear makeup religiously? Do we wear clothes or colors that make us look more interesting or attractive?

If you don't like her, cool, but unless she came to your house and spilled a bunch of shit on your carpet, fucked your boyfriend or threw up on your cat why do you have any reason to hate her?

-Algebra Huxley
I totally agree.. I learned about Lana through Hipster Runoff and assumed that she was just some lamestreamer like it always said she was. But then I listened to her music and really really liked it. My brother thought her music was beautiful, and I must say I do enjoy her songs.  :)

I really enjoy her music.  The songs are strong enough for me to forgive the manufactured image, although I am still confused at why anyone would want permanent duckface.

I've refrained from posting in this thread until now because I think you summed up perfectly how I feel about her as well.

Yeah. I like her music a lot so far. The songs that I've heard, so I can look past all that other stuff. It's about the music anyway, not what she looks like.

idk, the fact that she changed herself like that just to become more successful.. it just makes me question the authenticity of her music.

it kinda bums me out that it took so little for her to get on SNL, too. deerhunter has like.. multiple acclaimed records and they still haven't gotten booked
