Lana Del Rey - Born To Die

Lana Del Rey - Video Games

I really like her voice and tone, it's easy, kind of lazy. Plus the lyrics hit home with me.
WHAT DO YOU THINK??

The thing is she even admits that "men in business suits" told her to alter her appearance and style to cater to a different demographic. A manufactured pop star? Sounds just like Gaga to be honest.

I've been trying to avoid commenting too although my reason was I do not like her.
I heard Blue Jeans first and it really turned me off and none of it was due to what she looked like or had been in the past. Then I heard a few other songs and decided that I really don't like her at all.
But it's not because of her image or whatever and I totally get what you are saying, it IS about the music and not what she was before or what she did to get here. I just reeeally don't like the music  :)
And I don't know why but the thing you said about her being a cyborg made me crack up!  ;D

As I commented on fb, Alg....I don't care if she's got a new image and a new name...She sounds bored when she sings, and she bores me.  For the record, I think Gaga is immensely talented and now that she's broken through, I wish she'd cut the schtick and just let the talent speak for itself.  At this point....I'm just not feeling this broad.

I find her image redundant but I would happily revel in it if I enjoyed her music. As much as it can be enjoyable to bitch about stuff, people (I) really do enjoy getting caught up in the hype and liking stuff, liking stuff is fun and enjoyable, I like liking stuff! I just don't enjoy her music at all. The best part of her song Video Games for me is the instrumental in the background but apart from that I find her singing totally boring and not at all 'emotional' or 'moving'. I listened to Born To Die and her song with some title like Blue Jeans but found them both as forgettable.

I think some people do go over the top criticising her appearance and making slightly sexist comments rather than the fact that they don't enjoy her music but it's not just a total conspiracy, for a lot of people this is just boring music.

I think it's good that we gave our opinion about her, good or bad, but now it's time to gtfo and leave this thread for those who enjoy her music. If there's anything i've learned it's to stay away from threads of bands/artists you don't like.

I've been trying to stop myself from going off on a rant about this. It worked for a few days.

The amount of negative response to Lana Del Rey makes it seem like people feel like they've
been somehow tricked...or like Lana is a cyborg created with the sole purpose of tricking people
into enjoying her music or being physically attracted to her.

Lana Del Rey used to have a different name. So did a ton of other artists. If MGMT was called
"Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser and three other dudes" the band wouldn't have nearly
as much notoriety because the masses just have to have some image to latch on to. Marilyn Manson
wouldn't have been as popular in the 90's (before he sucked) if he was just called 'Brian Warner.'
Bands and artists create an IMAGE...they do it because they want a vehicle to represent their music.
It helps, and it's fun. People like an image.

Lana Del Rey isn't her real name? OH NO! Kill her!
Lana Del Rey, out of millions of people, was backed by record labels who thought she had talent? KILL HER!
Lana Del Rey...wait...she...oh my god...did the unspeakable and.....HOLY SHIT, SHE CHANGED HER IMAGE?! KILL HER! GOUGE OUT HER EYES! SEND HER BACK TO THE OCEAN FROM WHENCE SHE CAME!

When I first heard the song 'Video Games' I had no idea what she looked like, nor did I give any sort of a fuck. It's not just the song (which was written by someone else. gasp) that's good...because if you had, say, Celine Dion singing it it wouldn't have the emotional resonance that it does when Lana Del Rey sings it.

People also say that it's her only good song. I doubt most of these people have put any effort into hearing any more of her music before they latched onto the 'mainstream' internet sentiment and started hating her, not because of her music but because she altered her appearance in some way. Do people work out to become more physically attractive and sought after by mates? Do females wear makeup religiously? Do we wear clothes or colors that make us look more interesting or attractive?

If you don't like her, cool, but unless she came to your house and spilled a bunch of shit on your carpet, fucked your boyfriend or threw up on your cat why do you have any reason to hate her?

-Algebra Huxley
I totally agree.. I learned about Lana through Hipster Runoff and assumed that she was just some lamestreamer like it always said she was. But then I listened to her music and really really liked it. My brother thought her music was beautiful, and I must say I do enjoy her songs.  :)

Lana Del Rey mentions MGMT (MTV Interview)

-Interviewer: Brooklyn and Harlem rap right now is so ill. It’s a real New York scene forming.
-Lana: Yes, that’s what it is! When I was here, MGMT was blowing up, but after that it was like, nothing. But that’s what’s happening right now.

I really don't get the hate for her
I think the performances were awkward but I think she's very lovely and I personally think she's sexy as fuck
:/
I still only know and am obsessed with Blue Jeans and Video Games, though LOL

I just think it's sad (Her position she's in right now.) I've only seen one person praise her so far and everyone else just keeps hating on her. She really ISN'T talent-less, though. And she isn't ugly. It's kind of annoying to me whenever ANYONE gets the amount of hate they do sometimes. She did nothing wrong, and I've heard WAY worse music. I kind of like her and I am hoping her other songs are like the two I like. I swear, Blue Jeans has been on repeat. I am in love with her voice, too. I don't get why everyone HATES her soul. :/

I respect people who say that but I've seen people completely hate her guts.
It's weird to me.

EDIT; I honestly find a lot of the other things I've heard to be boring as well which is why I don't even remember them lol
I didn't particularly like the demos I found on youtube (like I said... I don't even remember them) but I don't sit here saying how horrible and talent-less and ugly she is like I've seen some other people do all over the internet :|
I even went to check her last.fm page out once and it had so many bad remarks and nasty comments on it. I understand not liking someone and having an opinion but just saying NASTY things is unfair.
That is what is making me feel uneasy... the really insulting comments.

idk there's just something about her that bothers me, and it's hardly even really directed at the music itself, apart from this incident where she couldn't sing live (I still struggle to see how she got booked, when there are plenty of other bands.. ugh nvm). it just feels like she's made it her 'brand' to be hipster-like, for 'cool' points. like she's trying to take advantage of that market by trying to replicate it. it's not really her. it goes hand in hand with the need for plastic surgery, the need for her to change who she originally was, to 'make it'. I don't see how anything good can be seen out of that. it just feels very fake

It's like when she cracked a smile and then caught herself and went back to the scowl.  Like Abby, I'm just bored by the music.  I don't see her as an artist expressing herself, so I'm just not interested.  I don't hate her-I just don't care.  What I hate is that she's about to be crammed up our asses big time.

Agreeeed! I listen to her every night to go to sleep, actually.

I can't get detailed because this is as inside as info gets....but her people are scrambling trying to fix her.  I mean, right at this moment.  Poor thing.  You should always stay true to who you are as an artist.

Del Rey.. all I think of is Del Ray in Michigan an urban ass GHETTO section of Detroit. Wikipedia states her name was a result of her label to make her more street. I dont know if there is a direct correlation but nah..you aint hard girl..

i think she has a good voice, and a cool, sad and pretty songwriting style (although i just found out she doesnt write all her own songs.... didnt know that). i didnt really like her in interviews and usually that will put me off the music, even though it shouldnt, but video games is beautiful, and the rest of her songs arent bad either. im trying not to let things like her horribly botoxed lips get in the way of her songs and i think im winning. i wonder how she'd sound with full music as opposed to her starkly minimal instrumentals, though.

if its just cuz the snl fiasco, she should know she can outperform that. her 'people' shouldnt be trying to fix anything but her apparent stage fright.... unless of course it was just because it was her tv debut. they might also do good in fixing her self concsious girly girl image... aka the bad botox. then again if that's just who she is, she should be introduced to the health affects of botox and other cosmetic surgery, as well as it's unattractiveness.

It is because of SNL, but they are her "people" so.....just FYI, the lip injections aren't botox.  Botox is used for wrinkles.

its used for lips too but whatever i dont know what the en vogue way is to look like a fish these days. her people trying to fix her sounds so dirty, cant they just let a bad performance get its good press and move on? people love nothing more than to watch a bombing, especially when she comes back better. i hope they dont resort to lip synching. i feel bad cuz she was obviously just nervous and now her 'people' are probably making her feel like shit. I think pretty much all singers use vocal coaches.  I mean, this guy coaches Gaga.  Roger Federer has a coach.  If people at the top of their game need guidance, then surely someone can help this chick.  I don't like her voice but some people do.  Perhaps if she had a legitimate voice instructor instead of plastic surgeons and stylists, something could be made of her.

the album just leaked and i'm listening to it now. after another time born to die is actually ok and now i'm listening to off to the races, before when i'd just read the lyrics i thought that it sounded dumb as hell (mostly because i don't want anyone quoting my favourite book in a song lol) but i actually do quite like it haha, i guess i just love the little girl voice she does in it.

this is shaping up to be a really good pop album, still don't really like Video Games but she sings a lot differently in the other songs and in an over the top style that i'm a fan of when it comes to vocals. i was adamant about her being boring and cliche before but i suggest you guys to give this another listen if you didn't like her before because these songs are really fun!

omg how awkward is it gonna be if we all turn out to be super fangirls. what are y'alls favourite tracks? i'm not going to lie, i've been listening to this non-stop on my ipod. lol i hate to be so precise/pitchforky but numbers aren't really enough to describe how much i like them:

Born To Die - 8.7/10
Off To The Races - 9/10
Blue Jeans - 7.5/10
Video Games - ?? the last time i heard it, pre-album i'd say 5/10 and then rate it less because the overplaying pissed me off so much
Diet Mountain Dew - 6.8/10
Nation Anthem 7.4/10
Dark Paradise - 8.4/10
Radio - 8.6/10, "now my life is sweet like cinnamon, like a fuckin' dream i'm livin' in" love it!
Carmen - 8.6/10
Million Dollar Man 8/10

need to listen to the rest of the tracks more

i watched some of her live videos and i think a problem is that she really doesn't have the confidence whilst performing the songs to make them sound so fun and sexy, she's nice but i think she really needs to master how great things sound on the record

Thank you Bubble!  :-*

So Ive been hesitant to post in here because Ive been unsure of my true opinion of her music. I listened to the album last night and I had been listening to her stuff on Youtube as well. I will say that I do love her look and the style of her videos (the image collages) really drew me in initially, more so than her music. Im a sucker for that retro pinup look and I think she really pulls it off. Yeah, she may have had some work done, but really, who hasn't in the entertainment business nowadays?

As for the music, I do like some of the tracks a lot, and it seems like the ones I like more than others are the singles..but maybe it's because I have only listened to the other tracks maybe once or twice. The one thing that turns me off about some of the songs is that the lyrics seem to be really cliche', the one that especially sticks out is Lucky Ones..It just seems like it doesn't really match her style and could really be written for any pop star...but on the other hand, I do think that song especially showcases her vocal talent. Her voice actually reminds me of Fiona Apple at some points, but I do like her range.

Here is my rating of the tracks from best to worst:

Born To Die
Blue Jeans
Radio
Summertime Sadness
Video Games
Diet Mountain Dew
Dark Paradise
Off to The Races
Carmen
This Is What Makes Us Girls
Without You
Million Dollar Man
Lucky Ones
Lolita
National Anthem

Dark Paradise is pleasant. I like that one. It sounds all floaty and gewd. Lol, I'm so loquacious.

I mean, I can forgive her giant fake lips and poor SNL performance if she makes up with a bangin' album. 8) Gurl just needs some practice live is all.

I think it's interesting that she refers to this as a "project."  She is supposedly re-releasing her Lizzy Grant record so I wonder if the Lana Del Rey persona is just a one time shot or if she'll keep it as Lady Gaga has.  I tried to listen to the record but honestly her voice just grates on me-it's like nails on a chalkboard.  Some of the songs aren't as boring as Video Games and Blue Jeans, but I can't get past her voice.  She's definitely got stylized vocals that people are either going to love or hate.

^I have those pants.

She's catching a lot of flack for saying that she thought she looked beautiful on SNL.  I've never heard anyone say that about themselves.  It was probably taken out of context.

What's funny is how everyone keeps making the comparison... I thought she did just fine on SNL. It's just how she sings.

Kristina, you do have a point. It's seriously boring seeing her perform. Haha.

i had been hearing so much about lana del rey's performance on SNL
and was expecting something horrible.
then i watched it, and i was like "what the fuck is wrong with people, why is this bad???"
i can't speak for her music because i only really watched that video, and heard a bit of another song which i wasn't a big fan of
but that performance, i thought, was instead brilliant.
she seemed vulnerable, but also very certain of the image she was projecting, something like how Nico (don't get me wrong, i don't think she's the next Nico..) or Marianne Faithful perform.
very still, very somber.  i loved it.
people who ripped on that performance, Brian Williams, i mean, what the hell does brian williams the anchorman know about a good performance?  sorry to say!
just because she didn't smile or something?

Well lala, I think you might want to re-listen because the problem is, she hit every note.

Also, that article saying Del Rey is a zero talent pop star...
the "writer" also refers to Katy Perry as if she were also zero talent and a fake, saying that Del Rey is the "indie cool"version.
It's these down in the dumps, judgy, catty journalists that i think could very well ruin the beauty of music, moreso than big labels.
This person clearly doesn't even know what they're talking about, only that they have seen Katy Perry in magazines and heard about her big production concerts and therefore she must be a gimmick.
I feel like people can learn a lot from letting successful people actually not bother them.
So many haters on MGMT, it  seems, were just people who judged their choice to be on a big label
when if they were faced with the same decision, who knows how they would have reacted.
Del Rey blew up too fast, she's too beautiful, she's not "indie" enough now.  such stupid bs.
Don't these supposedly "counterculture"journalists realize that all they ever do is basically turn their backs on very real talent?
Katy Perry, if you saw her on the grammys, was really fucking good.
She actually has that voice, but more than that, when you see Rihanna and Katy Perry sitting there, talking..it's like, you can see there's something special about them that makes them stand out.
Maybe Del Rey being an indie cool version of katy perry is actually too much of a compliment, who am i to say.
All i know is, it's so typical and we should all remember that the glass ceiling isn't broken yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_ceiling

tl;dr
I do think she's talented, I just don't care for her voice at all.  She can sing-in that she can carry a tune, but she didn't on that particular night.  Her nerves got the best of her.  Happens to singers starting out all the time.

You know, Daisy. You and Lana both look related. But you don't have duck lips, so this is a huge compliment :)

I read that as "retarded" and was like, Who pissed in Kristina's Wheaties?

Yes, they were together before anyone had heard of her. Idk if it was before or after her beak was created.

Okay, thank you, Lala <3 :3
Sara, me as well... the lines "Think I'll miss you forever like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky" is stuck in my head for days... aww, I just realized that the sun also is a star, that's even sadder. They never gonna meet... from our sight. :)

Noo, it's not like this, Daisy!
I don't think that this is silly. I think it's genuine. The fact that the sun is a star as well means that actually it does belong to the star-community, but it will never meet them. Sorry for my poor English, I feel like not being able to explain the whole thing, but I think it's quite tragical..  xP
Today, a boy told me he thinks that these lyrics are stupid because stars don't have a brain an couldn't miss something.. I told him it was a metaphore, but he just laughed.. hmpff -.-'

Yeah, I know, simile, awwwwww xD
Ok I accept the fact that it doesn't make sense to you ^^  Maybe it only makes sense to me because I can relate to it. Sometimes I cannot relate to the nicest poems or lyrics just because I never felt like the author.

Lol, seriously. Like Ashlee Simpson and her nose job. If you just admit it and say you don't give a fuck who knows, I'd have a lot more respect for you because, hey. If you wanna get plastic surgery, nothing wrong with that. If it makes you happy. Because I'd get plastic surgery too if I could xD

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME
I LITERALLY CAN NOT LISTEN TO A LOT OF OTHER MUSIC
MY LIFE CONSISTS OF LANA AND THAT'S IT.
And I'm ok with it BUT STILL.
Omg. This album. On repeat. Can. Not. Stop. SINGING.
EVEN WHEN I SLEEP
OMG
Going crazy tbh.
Sisters, let's all hold hands and go down to the river to pray for my wretched soul. It is infested with Lana. Leaves no room for other artists.

To be on the serious side... I actually have started writing a story that I want to turn into a good piece of work and then make it into a film.
It's really cool and very inspired by her music and her look (along with other stuff.)
It's very awesome... and I never say that about any of my work haha.

Meh I don't listen to her everyday anymore. I did for about a month. I have noticed that she repeats lines from songs in other songs?
I mean yeah I really like her, but not as much now. Blue Jeans still gets me though. I sing that in the shower almost every time.

Oh god, I feel like my style even got influenced by her. I've started dressing more girly and jumped out of my usual dark/black clothing O_O
I don't know why, but, I always also think: Theme - Western.
I mean, she definitely isn't all much of that. But, I just think it.
Blue Jeans is my absolute favorite song. It's perfect.
I too noticed that she uses a lot of the same words/lines but, it really doesn't bother me all that much. I'm so excited for her to tour. I really love this woman.

EDIT;

I don't think it's weird at all.  I think it's natural to want to see the real Lizzie shine through.  I'm still not a fan of her voice, but I'm pulling for her.

People keep thinking she's had her lips done, but apparently not.
I thought so too at first.  I mean, come on, that's not normal size.

yeah, in one pic is was going downward then in the next it was going upward

wow I've never even seen some of those photos, holy hell she's still beautiful and all but I definitely prefer the way she looked before, that look was stunning.

maybe it's just my idea of beauty or something.

She actually looks genuinely good when she hasn't got all that makeup smuthered on her face.
I really like her with the black hair and that fringe, she looks real cute there.

From what I've gotten out of it is that he is as hard/dangerous to be with.
I mean, she did say that Born To Die, Blue Jeans & Video Games is like a continuing story of one man and her love for him. (Was it those three?)
If you put those words/lyrics to that video, I think it makes a lot of sense.

EDIT; I was thinking of Off To The Races (as to how the video makes sense to me with the BLUNT words describing a man)
Blahblah, you still get it, I hope? haha.

I love it! It's such a sexy video! I really like that they used the same actor from the Born to Die video because ultimately, if she does a video for Video Games, which she may or may not, it's almost like the videos tell the story of their relationship going backwards..I hope she does a video for Video Games eventually, but who knows since the one she made initially with all the film footage is really popular.

Hey guys, I bought tickets to the NYC show on the 7th
BUT, I'm regretting not buying tickets for the 10th. I didn't know my best friend wanted to go to two shows so I didnt bring it up when buying the tickets LOL
Now, they're sold out.
Stubhub has 'em for an ok price but fees and shit make it an annoyance
If you guys know anybody who needs to sell tickets on the 8th or 10th (preferably 10th!!) please please please let them know I'm interested! Keep an eye out?

If anything, we're going to just go to the venue and see if we can snag tickets from someone
&IDK how that's going to go :/

despite her appearance and her painful SNL performance, I really do like her music. particularly Video Games (cliche i know). it has a really nice nostalgic feeling and its making me reminiscent of summer. good mood music for sure. but her whole "reinventing" herself thing is a little off putting in a way... sorta takes away from the music sometimes  :-\

Thank you! I still can't get over it. I really don't know what it is about her that makes me so infatuated with her. My best friend gave me the picture of us with her! I look terrible and you can definitely see me still tearing in the photo/my makeup messed from it LOL.
http://instagr.am/p/LoleUemXk6/
Meeting her just made me love her so much more. She was so kind and comforting! It was so nice to see someone care so much about someone they know nothing about! I wish I would have gone to the last NY date :( I had work tonight. Her voice and singing is a thousand times better live. Tbh, it doesn't translate as well on video. Million Dollar Man is one of my favorite songs and was the most memorable one that night.

I completely understand the infatuation. I feel like I would be the same way if I ever met her. I think it's all in her presence and energy. There's just something mysterious about her that's magnetizing. Throw in her gorgeousness, and bam. But I love your picture with her! You all look great and I'm so glad you were able to see her!

And I don't know why but the thing you said about her being a cyborg made me crack up!  ;D
This might be weird to quote myself or whatever but wow I just reread this and I was really dumb I am so in love with her now I have not been able to stop listening to the album for weeks. It took me so long to realize how good she was. So long that I missed her free show here  :-\ but seriously I take back everything I said yikes.

Yeah I kind of cringed when I saw that but I love the video, I like the ugly prettiness of it. I also really like the bits in which she narrates the story.

^ I too cried when I saw it. Her monologues get to me. Especially this one because I had more-so of a connection to it. I feel like people don't give her enough credit as an artist in general, to be honest. I think we've got to see a little more of a side to Lana that we haven't really seen-- a darker soul she is. I also kind of feel like the video is either the truth stretched out or even fully the truth. The video also kind of connected the whole rich daddy to trailer park thing. That's kind of especially the line, "But I really didn’t mind because I knew that it takes getting everything you ever wanted and then losing it to know what true freedom is." And that's mostly the part I can connect with. Another things I should mention that I really liked is the fact that the guys were not the typical "hot" guys you'd find in music videos. It gave it more of a genuine feel.
Ohhhh, and I also love the whole 'trusting in the kindness of strangers' theme that is constantly repeated in her songs. And forget it-- the last scenes were shot beautifully.

Here's a new one she posted on her twitter. I JUST saw/heard it. Beautiful sound. Haven't listened/looked into lyrics, though.

to be quite honest, I don't think any of the songs are as good as ride. to me, the others are kind of boring...

WHAT?
Yayo is so powerful.
Of Gods and Monsters is so insane.
Body Electric is epic.
AH I CAN GO ON.
Honestly, Paradise Edition > Born To Die.
Don't get me wrong, I love BTD. But, the Paradise Edition is so dark and eerie. I guess it's just my weird morbid taste lol

oh, I know! I have that older version sitting on my computer but I never listened to it to compare the two lol
I don't really care at this point haha

Though, for Body Electric the live version is so much better. The instrumental gets to my bone and I like the way she sings it better away from studio (esp. without the effects on her voice. Why did they do that?)
