MGMT's MUSICAL ORBIT
« on: December 09, 2010, 05:48:24 PM »

MGMT has a large musical orbit.  Mentions of influences, inspirations, and favorite artists/songs/albums are frequent.  This thread is intended to be the one place where we can keep all of this straight and refer back to.

The list was started by myself and jcj but is in no way complete and only intended to be a starting off point. Please post new mentions, updates, corrections, discussions, etc. and we will do our best to keep this first original post updated.

Many artists can go under multiple different categories so if you feel strongly about an artist going in a specific category please indicate that and site the source if possible.  In order to keep some sort of categorization, most artists are only listed once and not in the multiple categories they can fall under. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Holy crap, how cool. I cannot stress enough that Of Montreal belongs on either the influenced by or enjoys list. I mean they thank 'em on Oracular Spectacular and seem to rave about them much, it just seems right xD

I know that Neil Young is mentioned, but I feel like he should be in the influences...he's so important to Andrew.

Sounds good to me.  That's why I did this, I wanted everyone's opinions. I added him there and I love that he's important to him.  :)

Thank you.  I figured there's only going to be more and more artists/songs that pop up in the future so there needed to be somewhere to organize and make sense of it all.  Glad you appreciate it  :)

Wow great thread :) I love to read about their favourite music because I always discover good music through MGMT's influences. Bruce Haack should definitely be added to the list,. I also know that James likes an album called Surfer Rosa, by the Pixies wich he mentioned in an interview. Here's also a good article with a playlist from Ben: http://www.wired.com/underwire/2009/11/playlist-mgmt-ben-goldwasser/

Thank you! I completely agree on finding good music because of them! That's one reason we wanted to do this. Would you say Bruce Haack is an influence or someone the band enjoys? And yes, we will definitely add the Pixies. I remember James mentioning them. And thanks for the link to the playlist! We'll add that as well! Good info!!!  :)

I don't if it would be considered "Toured With" worthy but The Willowz did open for them for at least a couple of gigs this past spring..Toronto at the Mod and in New Hampshire (or was it Vermont) (it was a college spring fling I think)

Edit: I almost forgot ...Janelle Monet @ Red Rocks

Edit Again: oops sorry for the spelling error should be "Monae" ;D...thanks for picking that up LOL

Thank you everyone for the compliments and the additions. I am glad that other people find this interesting as well and that we are already beginning to add to it.  I went in and made the following updates:

Enjoys - Pixies, Panda Bear, The Tornados, Joe Meek, Bruce Haak
Tour - The Willowz, Janelle Monae

Wow great thread :) I love to read about their favourite music because I always discover good music through MGMT's influences. Bruce Haack should definitely be added to the list,. I also know that James likes an album called Surfer Rosa, by the Pixies wich he mentioned in an interview. Here's also a good article with a playlist from Ben: http://www.wired.com/underwire/2009/11/playlist-mgmt-ben-goldwasser/

Thank you very much for reminding us that this playlist existed.  It's all been added.  I did put Bruce Haack in the "enjoys" category but let me know if you fell strongly about it being somewhere else.

Ah yes, I do remember something like that.  I would like to find the actual interview though before I put it up here.  Let me know if you find it and I can look for it too later.  Thanks!

EDIT: I found it, so I will add this at some point tonight.  Thanks again  :)

I love this all so much... the thread, feedback, everything. I get a lot of my music from things like this.

I wonder if they like Arcade Fire. Cuz in an interview once they were asked something like 'What's a band people compare you to that you don't think seems correct' and they said Arcade Fire. I wasn't sure if that meant they liked 'em or not xD Anyone wanna do the digging? lol

Awesome thread! <3

I always have it in the back of my mind (or sometimes at the front) that since MGMT are the only band/artist that I've ever srsly loved the music of, I ought to try giving their loves a thorough listen, at least once. It seems like a monumental task though, like a giant ocean of music that I'm unaware of and I'm always like, "where the hell would I start o_O" - it's overwhelming to even think about beginning.  This thread is perfect for that. :-* ^_^

(may I suggest though, that within each category everything be alphabetized? I don't have OCD or anything, I swear.)

p.s. I think they remixed Chairlift's "Evident Utensil". :)

I don't see many similarities between the two, either, I can just see fans of one liking the other.

Oh and I'm the same! I'm very open minded about music but cuz pf that people always say 'look up blah' and I get this long list of needed Googlings. =/

I completely agree that it's a monumental task.  It was even more overwhelming when I didn't have it organized so that's why we started this.  Wow, and I thought I had OCD  ;) as you may be able to tell with my organization of the list, but the fact that it's not in alphabetical order doesn't really bother me.  Plus it wouldn't really even organize it all that much more since artists would go by last name and then bands by the first letter. They are kind of in order according to the source that I found them in so I want to leave them like that for now, but I think that alphabetizing them isn't a bad request and we can do that in the future.

As for the Chairlift remix...Since Chairlift is on here several times I didn't think it needs it's own category yet.  It wasn't intended to list out all the different music categories, but instead to cover all the different artists/songs and then categorize those.  I hope that all made sense.

Well, Dan [Treharne]'s a fan. I remember that interview though - I think the question was, "Which band/artist do you not like being compared to?"
I don't think of AF sounding very similar to MGMT at all, but when Suburbs (II) was out everyone was like, "it sounds like Time to Pretend!" I couldn't (still can't) hear the similarity though.

I don't hear it either..the only similarity is that they both make awesome music LOL

Agreed.  They are nothing alike but at the same time two of my favorites.  I do recall the interview where they stated that they didn't like being compared to Arcade Fire but they never mentioned why so I'm not going to assume anything past that.  I don't think they've ever addressed it since then.

I've had this same experience. This thread is the best thing ever.

Also I'm absolutely sure that one of them in some interview mentioned the Black Angels. I know because I checked them out after seeing that and  really liked them (saw them live last month). I think it was James, and I think he named it as a band that he would like to have open for MGMT, and I think he said that maybe MGMT should open for them (I think this was an early interview).

... found it: http://www.thathottness.com/blog/the-interview-james-richardson-of-mgmt/
also mentions the Brian Jonestown Massacre

Seriously, it's organized, unique, helpful, and easy to refer back to if you're like 'What's that one band they toured with?' I appreciate it tons :)

Yay, glad you like! I feel like we are missing a lot of bands for "the toured with" section.  On a daily basis I think of a new one out of nowhere and I go in and add them.

Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate it.  After 6 years of higher education though I am done studying, but yes a lot of hard work went into that as well.  The only homework I have is now MGMT related and that's way more fun.  It never feels like work.

I added links for the SPIN 2008 article, Gay Beach East Village Radio, and Naked Fridays so you can see where the information is coming from.

We wondered who would pick up on that. ;D You should hear our conversations.  It would seem like we were talking in code to anyone but another MGMT fan.

Oh ok I understand. Well they say Sonic Boom isn't actually a fan ;) Maybe they are not also. I mean neither am I, but I like them so I remembered it. And I tried searching for a video but nothing :/
Do you update the list whenever they cover something new?

Yeah, I changed my wording of my above response once I went back and watched the interview.  We do keep it as updated as possible so if you ever hear of anything new or anything you know of that's not on here please let us know.

I know that Chairlift is good friends with MGMT. In Maryland Ben said that they had called Caroline hoping that she would perform with them at their Radio City shows, but I guess that didn't work out.

Thanks for that info, I didn't know that they had asked them for those shows. :) Chairlift is on there 3 times already for toured with, a band in their musical orbit from SPIN, and on one of Ben's playlists.

“I was listening a lot to [Van Morrison’s Veedon Fleece]. That song ‘Who Was That Masked Man,’ that’s my favorite. That and the Bang Masters, which were early, early recordings. I really loved this song ‘It’s All Right,’ which I think kind of influenced a song like ‘I Found A Whistle.’ We went through different styles of recording for pretty much every song. During one phase, that song was more garage-y, early Van Morrison-sounding.”  Ben

From American Songwriter right?  Hmm, maybe I should make a random song mention category.  I think I will!

I think it's really cool when they tells us about songs specifically influencing a song they wrote.  Another one was The Stones-Emotional Rescue and Electric Feel.

I do as well so I began the category....

Artists/Songs Influencing Specific MGMT Songs
•   Telegraph Avenue - Siberian Breaks
•   Van Morrison, It's All Right - I Found a Whistle
•   The Beach Boys, All I Wanna Do - Flash Delirium
•   The Rolling Stones, Emotional Rescue - Electric Feel
•    CA Quintent, Love, Buzzcocks -It's Working

I also added Buzzcocks and Love to influences.

You should be able to get the songs off any of their playlists on iTunes or mediafire...at least that's how I did.

Thanx. Where's that from?

SPIN Magazine, December 2007 : "In addition to drawing from Neil Young, Black Sabbath, and Throbbing Gristle, VanWyngarden admits to 'blatantly ripping off Neil Michael Hagerty from Royal Trux'."

As for Monochrome Set, jcj heard that in an audio interview I believe so maybe she can tell us which one.

Thank you!

In a Rolling Stone Interview Andrew mentions Blonde Redhead.  He says "Sophomore year, I was really getting into vinyl and took this record player my great aunt had given me and had that in my room and had a ton of records, a lot of my mom and dad's records, and things I'd find at thrift stores and stuff. I was listening to T. Rex a lot, Murray Street by Sonic Youth, and more recent stuff from back then, like Blonde Redhead, and Black Sabbath. I was really into Black Sabbath."

Here is one of many interviews where Andrew mentions Phish.  He says, "Phish isn't really in my listening repertoire right now, but when I was in high school and college I was so into them. So how crazy is that to have one of your favorite bands think about covering your album? If they chose our album, I would go in a heartbeat."

Does anyone have any information regarding MGMT and Fleetwood Mac?  I've always wanted to know if anyone in the band, and maybe more so Andrew, likes them or would even say they are influenced by them.  I know they are all fond of the classic rock genre but I have never read or seen anything specific.  Recently I found this NME Review.  Would you say this is NME's interpretation of their influences or does this maybe indicate that they have actually mentioned them before?  Opinions?

I don't know about that... NME is always shaky to me, something tells me they just assumed their influences based on MGMT's sound. I mean I'm sure Fleetwood Mac is an influence but I've yet to hear it an interview. =/ IDK. I think you could add it though, I mean NME's a decent source.

This is awesome thread, thanks!  :)
How about the Doors, as they cover some bits of 'Light My Fire' in Letterman, does that count?
Also Andrew chooses Cindy Lauper (to the section of what they listen) as favourite artist (A: 'Probably a bad choice...' B: -'It's a good choice.')

Yeah I can add The Doors to the covers section.  As for Cindy Lauper, she's also in covers so I never added her to another section.  Thanks for reminding us about The Doors!

Glad you appreciate it. This is all I have so far of the article, it's taken right from NME's website.  You can see that Andrew also mentions Euphoria in addition to the two records you mentioned.  So far the three bands in this little part we can see are already included in the master post but I made it it's own post as well.  Someone please let us know if you get your hands on a scan or find out the rest of the list.

Ok I ended up getting it myself. Andrew shares some of his favorite psychedelic albums that helped open up his mind as part of NME’s 100 Greatest Albums You’ve Never Heard in the January 1, 2011 issue.

The artists and albums Andrew gave us have been added as a whole to the master post. All of these artists already happened to be included in the "influenced" category.

•   The Red Crayola - The Parable of Arable Land

•   The Television Personalities - They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles
•   Love - Da Capo

I'm always double posting up in this bitch, but I forgot about some of the shoutouts (Nas, Angelo Badalamenti, Cypress Hill) given during MGMT In a Van @ Smokeout so I added them to that section.  Let me know if some of those other shoutouts were actually musicians.

Also CSS and Cameo added to enjoys section ~

And on some other interview I remember him mentioning Richard Strauss.  :)

I don't know that they are big Alice In Chains fans now a days. They may have been more so in the past and probably respect them as musicians, but in my opinion, he's a bit sarcastic about that band in this video. They've said in the Narduwar interview that Sonic Boom is assuredly not an Alice In Chains fan, and I personally cannot see them listening to these guys much for inspiriational purposes and I don't hear much of an Alice In Chains influence in their songs. We'll keep Alice In Chains in the "covers" section of the orbit. Hope everyone can agree on this.  ;D :) :-* 8)

I know I know, I was being ironic this time. I got it all wrong from that first interview. It seemed that James might like them but it's now obvious to me that Ben and Andrew kind of don't :). I don't know, I started listening to music in the nineties so they were a part of my "musical education" and I did listen to them so at first I thought they might have too. But they are clearly joking about their music. similar to when thay said they were going to publish a staind tribute album. that was really funny!

This I must see! :o :o

Add to the list, even though these sound maybe a bit funny (?), but still Madonna, (some) Mariah Carey and yet again CINDY LAUPER!  :D I think Cindy Lauper already deserves to be added on the influence list or at least the 'listening to' list :P
Here's the source of this:

(The introduction lady says "Andrew and Nick"  :o )

Also from the Video Hits interview James mentions UB40 as surf music influence but Andrew rolls eyes to this (?)
I think UB40 is more like reggae than surf...
James also mentions The Pacies (??). And Matt mentions Telstar ;)

I think UB40 is more like reggae than surf...
James also mentions The Pacies (??). And Matt mentions Telstar ;)
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_aKCxvirWM&feature=related

Thank you very much for all this information ;D  Cindy Lauper is in artists they have covered but I will add her to the enjoys section too since you asked and she comes up so often when they talk music.  However, Mariah Carey was an obvious joke so she doesn't get a place here.  I think the Madonna was mentioned just in general as in them discussing pop music.

As for the second video, most bands they mentioned were already included but I added Felt under influences.  I believe the Telstar reference was about The Tornados instrumental record produced by Joe Meek, so I added The Torandos to influences since Joe Meek is already included.  James actually says he likes The Pixies and they were already included.  UB40 I think was a joke...I don't know though, maybe if some people really feel differently we could add it, but for now I will leave that off.

I think that covered everything.  It's tough making calls when it comes to these boys since they joke so often but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Oooh it was The Pixies, I couldn't hear that clearly :P
But thanks for adding some up. Yeah, it's sometimes impossible to know if they're joking or saying stuff for real, but that's just funny  ;D

UB 40 was definitely a joke and James mentions how he eventually grew fond of Pixies' Surfer Rosa.

Perhaps they were just fooling around an experimenting with different sounds of the song...but not sure either...Love it either way!

Andrew VanWyngarden on Psychedelia
NME Magazine, January 1, 2011
•   The Electric Prunes - Underground
•   The Red Crayola - The Parable of Arable Land
•   Euphoria - A Gift from Euphoria
•   The Television Personalities - They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles
•   Love - Da Capo

I'm listening to various songs from Love's Da Capo album on youtube.  I had heard of Arthur Lee before but never really listened to his music.

'Orange Skies' is such a pretty song

We will most definitely add him to the list and put him as being an influence for Siberian Breaks. Good find!  ;) I am actually a bit shocked we didn't already have Leonard Cohen on here!

The song that transports you to childhood: Talking Heads - City Of Dreams

Thank you!!!  Yes, I update it but jcj helps me tremendously with finding new mentions and conversing with me to decide who goes where.  I think it's pretty sweet to have all this in one spot and since it didn't exist, I created it.  It's been fun trying to keep it updated and keep up with all the mentions in my own listening.

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED SO FAR!!!!!

Umm, yeah.  My jaw literally dropped when I read it.  That song is probably in my top five favorite songs of all time.  I don't know if it was said becuase it makes sense or if they actually like it, but either way I was excited.  It's probably the prettiest song I have ever heard. They are amazing.  Hope Sandavol's voice is just so unique and peaceful.  I've never been more excited about a mention ever.  Now if I can only find out about Fleetwood Mac.......

Thanks a lot.  It was a ton of work up front but now that we have it going it's just about everyone contributing and me keeping it up to date.  I also have a lot of the music here and it can be overwhelming so I like to pick one artist and start with one album and continue from there.  But now I find myself getting stuck on my favorites and not moving on.

I think they did it at V Festival. I guess they tried to hype the people up. Or make the song decent  ;).

I am taking offense...I actually like the BEPs.   It makes my heart sing that MGMT covered this.  I missed them on the super bowl last night ....How were they?   What songs did they do?

LET'S GET IT STARTED IN HEEERRRRRREEE

The costumes were cool but the whole time I kept thinking...I bet Kanye West is going to say they stole his idea....
They sounded terrible though, esp Fergie, maybe it was the cold but she was totally off.

I don't think Fergie was off...I think the sound technicians had her turned down way too low....especailly her duet with Slash...it didn't sound like her at all. I did looooove her boots tho.

I realize some of you might like The Black Eyed Peas and you are entitled to that opinion.  I would never say anyone's music listening habits are wrong...different strokes for different folks.  But I do feel strongly about not continuing a discussion about them in this thread when MGMT is neither influenced nor probably likes them.  I had only posted that video because it was relevant to MGMT covering them, their Super Bowl performance isn't. Thank You!

We usually realize we aren't in random before it gets too far out of hand.  I realized it when I made the bad Electric Feel pun and left it at that.  Sometimes this thread nazi is the worst offender  :D

You'd like it if they covered Bieber!  I think that festivals lend themselves well to covers...unfortunately now that they have a much larger catalog, I don't see them doing a ton of covers.  I think it's really cool to hear them pay tribute to bands that have inspired them.  Hopefully they'll be headlining more festivals in the future and they'll have a longer slot.

"The Sacred Thread" is photos and graphics.  We're very proud of that thread.  However, it's been raped and pillaged and seems to be a magnet for folly.  It's the number 1 most viewed thread on the forum with no one even in the running to contest it.  For some reason, it just goes off topic and sparks fights.  Controversial but beloved and beautiful.

I don't even know what to say anymore.  ISN'T ANYTHING SACRED HERE?!??!  :'(

Hell no!  The Sacred Thread got knocked into general-I had to beg Luna to move it back to MGMT.

Which thread was that?  I was just hoping that this one wouldn't be tainted, but now it has.  I'm a good sport though, just patiently waiting for it to stop.

I see, I would agree that thread is beauty at it's finest. It can cheer you up in a second.

It was a bleak, dark night when it was ripped from the womb of the MGMT section....the forum was dark for days.......

Not surprised at all where this thread is going :D. From what I can tell, it's just bound to happen to all threads at one point.

I've tried to come up with one, but that was impossible. So here are a FEW of my favorite covers MGMT have done in the past YEAR:   8)
I Wanna Go Back by Laid Back
Burst by Magazine
and even though this was technically just a sound check but..
Losing Touch with My Mind WITH the one and only Sonic Boom by Spacemen 3

Anyone else wanna give their faves??

I LOVE the snippet of Burst they did for a while and would love to see them cover the whole track as I really think their style lends itself well to the track. Live Forever was also impeccable - Note perfect throughout.

Whilst on the subject (and i'll probably get slated for diverting from the general idea of the thread), I would love to see them cover the Chocolate Watchband version of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". Now that really would sound awesome and is very MGMT-like!!

Thanks but I think everyone here has seen that... at least once... and I believe Fairytale has noted the Talking Heads at the beginning of this thread.

Well we had started talking covers yesterday...

My fave was a sound check-Feel Good Inc by the Gorillaz.  I'd lovvvve to hear a legit live version of this.  I think it's a blast to hear them take on other people's music.  They are all such talented musicians....it's fun to sort of "hear" them cut loose.

I've heard of this!! Is there a video for it? I kind of figure you would link it in your reply if there was, but I would LOVE to witness this.

We were outside of the venue...Shianne heard it again outside of Merriweather Post Pavillion.  I had my flip cam ready to go that night praying they would perform it.

It sounds perfect....but they have ridiculously high standards and of course that's what makes them great.

James could rap.

I read this as raping...not surprised one bit though.

James would be excellent, but Andrew's auto tuned rap during Master Song is pretty damn sweet as well.  He even says "Can I rap?"  ;D  Tough call.

MGMT has a large musical orbit.  Mentions of influences, inspirations, and favorite artists/songs/albums are frequent.  This thread is intended to be the one place where we can keep all of this straight and refer back to.

Okay, i've got to say, this thread is borderline stalker status. It makes me feel like a creeper reading it. I feel that its way too much unnecessary research and info. Although i respect and give you that a lot of work was put into it. Im not exactly sure, why.. Does the band sound better from us knowing what music they listen to? Its one thing to have a thread for pictures and interviews, because the band knows its out there and want us to see it. This is all info that has been pooled together bit by bit. An obsession is obvious. I just get weirded out feeling but hey, im entitled to my opinion, now that ive shared, I will forever leave this thread..Its cold and sketchy in here.

I hate that you see this as unnecessary or stalkerish.  :-\ We (myself and Fairytale of Hurt) made the thread for a musical broadening of sorts for all the fans on the forum. We've had great and thankful comments regarding this list and we certainly appreciate them all. We didn't make this thread for MGMT, we made it for us, the fans. We like the music MGMT creates, therefore I think it's only natural to appreciate and possibly find new favorite bands that influence them and their music. I think I can speak for a few here on the forum when I say that we have found a ton of bands that we absolutely LOVE because of MGMT. And this is just an organized list (and a work in progress) to refer back to if anyone feels the need to search out bands that were mentioned by MGMT in interviews or bands that sound somewhat similar to MGMT musically. I hope you understand why we did this and I hope you can appreciate the reason it is here. And if this isn't something that floats your boat, to each his own. :)

I only read this thread for the first time last week and am loving it - I've got a Spotify playlist at home of stuff MGMT have mentioned as influential in interviews as well as covers they've done (yes, i'm a geek) and I really like some of the stuff that I wouldn't have heard otherwise. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

Keep up the good work with compiling the info guys!!

I'm going to try and not take this personally even though you indicated that the thread seems obsessive.  You are entitled to your opinion but so am I so I am going to give it to you.  First and foremost to answer your question, yes MGMT absolutely sounds better knowing what they listen to and are influenced by.  HOW IS MUSIC THAT INFLUENCES A BAND YOU LOVE NOT NECESSARY INFORMATION?  I almost feel bad for you as you clearly aren't listening to it in the way that can maximize your appreciation for it.  Music is created and formed based on influences.  Without one band you don't have another.  That is basic knowledge concerning the evolution of music.  Listening to Siberian Breaks knowing that Telegraph Avenue influenced it completely maximizes the appreciation and meaning behind the song.  So yes, the thread is completely relevant and necessary.  I can only hope that one day you will take this all into consideration and give it a chance.  I have tried to put myself in your shoes but I cant wrap my head around how you don't think it's necessary or relevant.  I am so confused as to where you are coming from.  It's like you stopped in and rambled off your opinions without even thinking what you were saying.

To call this thread stalker or obsessive is just mean, ridiculous, and unjustified.  This thread shows that there are many MGMT fans that are passionate about not only their music, but the music that influences them.  What is the difference between seeing a photo or a bit of information concerning a show and posting it vs. posting a mention of a band they like or are influenced by?  I see no difference as the band is both aware of their photos being taken and the words they speak in interviews.  Just because you don't enjoy it or find it relevant doesn't mean that others don't.  To call the "research" unnecessary is not justified as you are making assumptions about the time and effort that went into creating the thread.  To be honest, it didn't require much research at all.  I can recall bands that they have covered, mentioned liking, or have been influenced by off the top of my head so I decided to start putting them down here and now fellow forumers have helped keep it updated.  I figured that this forum would be the one place that it could be appreciated and to the most part it has until you came along.  As you can see, there are numerous people that really enjoy the thread and have complimented it.  It's almost as if you have shitted on anyone that has ever showed their appreciation or has contributed.  Not that I need to defend this any further or at all, but I will have you recall that Andrew has mentioned several times that he appreciates the position he is in because he can get the names out of bands he likes and is influenced by to his fans.  He even went on to say that it's exciting for him when a fan of his listens to music that he himself is a fan of because of the word he has put out. This is merely organizing that.

I'm not a hateful person and I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't understand why it was created.  I actually kind of feel bad that you don't get it.  Seriously, if you want me to explain further I will even if you have personally attacked something I am very proud of.  But I guess that just shows how strongly I feel about MGMT's influences in regards to the music they make themselves.  I think the better way to have handled this would have been to pose a question about my intentions behind starting the thread and to gain an understand on what it means to me and the others that appreciate the information here rather than hating on it. Then if you still disagreed, to state that and be on your way.  I don't think throwing around words like "stalker" and "obsessive" did anything to get your point across.  The only thing cold in this thread are your words.  If after reading this you still think it's unnecessary and obsessive to have a thread dedicated to discussions on the artists that influence a band that you love, then I do think it's best that you don't return to the thread, like you stated you wouldn't before.

Hunter I am being serious because a comment like that in this thread required a serious response.  I did my best to explain the intentions and meaning behind it.  I thought it was clear, but apparently it isn't to everyone.  I think I was more than nice considering the names being thrown around.

I think it's interesting to find out influences behind any band I love.
It's nice to hear where they get their ideas from, and it's also a great
possibility to find more good music to enjoy! For example Flash Delirium was influenced by
All I wanna do. I knew Beach Boys before I knew MGMT, and I got really excited to learn about
this influence. I love the harmonic parts on both of the songs!

Plus seeing a band I love listens to some same music I do is kinda
fun to know ;)

Keep up with the good work here :)

Thanks.  Happy to hear you find it interesting as well.

You bring up an excellent point...at the very least we get music recommendations which lead to other discoveries and next thing you know, you have all this new music to listen to  :)

Overly breaking something down as you're down here with the music takes an element of magic out of it. When I listen to music I dont enjoy it any better knowing the history of possible ideas and inspirations of where the song came from. That is like robbing from your imagination. Its like a chocolate chip cookie for instance. Delicious and perfect, but if you break it down, flour, sugar, baking soda, etc.. its becomes less desirable.

Its comes off as stalkerish and obsessive in how you are seeming to impress the band with this thread. Like for examply trying to lure Pete K in here. Like you are desperate for attention and approval, its really disarming and tasteless.

I guess we will have to just agree to disagree.  It's all a matter of opinion on how you want to listen to the music and I won't tell you how to do so just like I would expect that you wouldn't tell me.

I am not trying to impress the band, that never even crossed my mind.  Why would it?  This was done for fans on the forum.  I hate that you are assuming things especially since you don't know me personally or even as a fan.  Trust me, for those that do know me - they know that I would never seek that attention out.  They don't see this thread and even if they did they don't know who I am based on my forum name.  The connection would never be made so I have no motivation to even try. As for the Pete thing, I have no idea what you are talking about.  I have only made one post in that thread in my entire existence on the forum and it had absolutely nothing to do with this thread, nor did I mention or even hint at it.  What you are saying isn't founded and a blatant lie.

I really don't want to discuss this anymore.  You obviously have your opinions, as ridiculously assuming as they are, but I no longer feel they justify a response.

It's worth a lot, so thank you!  We've moved on now.

This is like the best tread so far because it's totally related to music and still relevant to mgmt so there's NO WAY to be stalkerish obsessive  in any way(unless you are obsessive person already so you have to forbid stuff to yourself lol)i wish it's updated a bit more often. so it's like if i would ever like to hang out with some musicians is because they are musically rich they know a lot about it they listen to it differently from average person they can always show you some new music or music you already know but from different perspective.. the conclusion is you can actually learn something and forget for a minute or more about Andrews hotness lol

so please leave this tread out of stupid conversations like this one and giving all attention to some playboy.
btw Fairytale you said it right! :)

So glad you like it and I agree with what you said.  I wish we could update it more often too but they haven't given us much lately.  Unless I remember or come across some old/new information, we have to make due with what's already there.  Luckily, we already have a lot.

Oh and thanks  ;) I was beginning to think I missed something!

The 'Photos and Graphics' thread terrifies me 100x more than this thread.
Actually, I selfishly think this thread is awesome because it's a quick way to find good tunes. Mmmmm...
But really y'all, none of the forumers have been overtly creepy (except for u no hoo...), so there isn't really a reason to worry. I don't think the guys would be weirder out by musical curiosity. I know if i had fans and they sorted out my musical crap, I'd be like "ok".

Excellent, and I was thinking the same thing.  It's a great way to discover new music.  To be honest, I didn't really think of it a lot when I started the thread.  I just thought it would be nice to share with other people that would appreciate it as much as me.  The bottom line is that fans like it and appreciate it and that's all that matters to me.  It's nice to see other people diving in a little deeper when it comes to the music.

I can't remember where, but I have seen articles mentioning The Band when it comes to MGMT in the past.  Below is one I just came across too so I will add them to influences.

I've been writing the new album in California and we're going to start recording tomorrow. It's got some garage/psychedelic/surf stuff going on with some chamber arrangements. One song sounds a bit like The Band or T-Rex. ~ Andrew

Electric Warrior is AMAZING! I think there is only like three songs I don't really care for but they aren't bad either. "The Slider" is a good album too.

Should Joy Division be added here as James is always wearing a Joy Division t-shirt?
I know it doesn't mean he's listening to the band and I don't remember him saying he listens to them.
But I think that as a musician he wouldn't wear band merchandise he'd hate or not know of?
