of Montreal's very own topic..
« on: January 13, 2009, 04:31:55 PM »

Because I know there has to be fellow oM fans in attendance here.

So what's your favorite album? Favorite song? Do you, like me, have an undying fascination towards Kevin Barnes? Did you like their older stuff more than their later material?

& does anyone have information on the side project between Kevin and Andrew?

I fucking love these guys.
Favorite song(s) have to be "A Collection of Poems About Water", "Labyrinthian Pomp", and "The Past is a Grotesque Animal".
The Sunlandic Twins, The Gay Parade, and Hissing Fauna are all amazing albums, but don't get me wrong, all their other stuff is undescribable as well!
Glad to see that there are more OM fans out here!

I have all the albums, and to be quite honest, I think Skeletal Lamping is the best. I love how it sounds like one huge song with hundreds of movments. "...text me your freaky fantasies to my phone/ back condoms on vanilla ice cream cones"

fuckin' love it!

I'm seeing them in Feb at the Gass House in Pomona... should be fun.

AArghh I'm seeing them in Manchester finally! So excited!! I love the lyrics.. "Eva, I'm sorry but you will never have me. To me you're just some faggy girl and I need a lover with soul power"

Their music makes me smile

I really like what I've heard from aldhils arboretum, but it's pretty hard to find. Even though I haven't really done much hard looking. Hissing Fauna and Sunlandic Twins are great of course. Pissed I missed them back in '07 with MGMT, didn't think they would be two of my favorite bands now. I was going to go, but didn't. Hmmm. oh and I would totally fuck Kevin Barnes. Just sayin'

i was sent here by pipboy. this is a separate post in music but since you guy are already talking about of montreal, maybe it would be good to post this here as well:

so, i thought i would be very very very nice and tell you all a special secret. okay, so it isnt really a secret but still.... an absolutely wonderful group of people have put together a new music festival here in little norman, oklahoma. this will be only the second year, but i have to admit, it has greatly impressed me... thank you wayne coyne. lol. so, back to the subject. i think the best way to describe it would be a budding SXSW? last year, the headliners were the chainsaw kittens (yes, from here), british sea power, the octopus project, and the polyphonic spree... among others. anyways, my point IS.... this years headliner is..... none other than... of Montreal.

the BEST part about this IS...... its free. yes, darlings. free. so, if you live anywhere around here, you should stop by on April 25th and see some free of Montreal. there are other great bands playing of course. here is the current listing:

during there show several native beasts were killed by gas mask wearing devil like priests which proceeded to crucify them on stage and after being killed there souls escaped the stage by sailing across the crowd in an inflatable raft, so hell of a stage show is an understatement haha ;D

So I have a question...

I love Of Montreal, and now I'm hearing they're even better live... is it worth $52 to buy another day's ticket at a festival?

Along with Of Montreal is Starfucker and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs... but I already bought tickets for the other day...

I really want to see Of Montreal... but I don't think I could find anyone to go with me even if I bought another ticket. :-\

Tough to say. They tour a lot so you should just stay tuned for dates near you. I think it's better to see them when they're the main event rather than a cast member in a festival line up. Just my 2 cents :)

my fave band hands down.
kevin makes some of the most creative albums i've ever heard.

my faves are hissing fauna, coquelicot, then a tie for satanic panic/skeletal lamping/sunlandic twins.

I think Forecast Facist Future is one of the most perfectly crafted pop songs I've ever heard.

I'm debating whether to see them again Sep 14th. It's a school day though. Hmmm.

Has anyone heard False Priest yet?
I don't like it. I feel like they've become a caricature of themselves. I hope their next album is called Controller Sphere.

I want to say that I like it. I know there are a lot of mixed reviews around...

Quite a few of the songs aren't exactly mind blowing, but I love "Your riotous defects", "Like a tourist", "Enemy Gene", "Famine affair", "Casualty of you", and "Around the way". That's a pretty good load of awesome songs. Most others on there will probably grow on me slowly, as happened with Skeletal Lamping.

Nobody should write off False Priest just because it sounds somewhat different. I'm sure of Montreal know what they're doing. Very excited to go see them in Seattle next month! :)

I think I like it more than Skeletal Lamping... But I don't like either near as much as I like Hissing Fauna.

I just started listening to them, and the song The Past Is A Grotesque Animal, it's amazing. I can't stop listening to it! And all these references to Norwegian places is so great. They're coming to Norway next month, but unfortunately I won't be able to see them :/

I saw them a couple of weeks ago in NYC. New album is amazing. The new line-up is good. I wish Kevin picked up a guitar though, which he never did :(
I met David Barnes, Kevin's brother who does all the artwork. He gave me a guitar pick from the stage. Then was at a bar with a couple of the members but didn't get to chatting them up that much really. All I wanted was to see Kevin lol. But better luck next time.

New album is ace.

My favorite albums are definitely Skeletal Lamping, Sunlandic Twins, Hissing Fauna and False Priest which is their latest.
What I think is really great with Skeletal is that you can listen to it from track 1 to track 15 as if the whole thing was just a single one-hour track. Of course I do have a few favorites but I still believe you should listen to it in its entirety and then decide what you like the most ;)
From the other albums, check out :
-ST : Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games, The Party's Crashing Us, Oslo in the Summertime
-HF : Almost everything is gold to me... But if I had to single out two or three tracks, it would probably be Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse, Gronlandic Edit and The Past is a Grotesque Animal.
-FP : I like the first half of the album a lot better than the second one. Maybe it's a bit more pop sounding idk...

Anyways, it's only my humble opinion, I must have forgotten some awesome tracks in this so tiny list but I hope it'll help you out to start with this fantastic band.

Seeing them tonight. I really would like to hear Forecast Fascist Future. I think they played it the first time I saw them, but I didn't know their music then and I was in very poor physical and mental condition that night... The more Hissing Fauna they play the better... I've only listened to the newest album a couple times. So, I probably won't know most of what they play very well. Should be interesting after knowing every song well the last few times I've seen them.

I saw them three weeks ago in Paris for the first time. Such a great experience ! From what I can remember, they played 4 or 5 tracks of False Priest and the rest was mainly Hissing Fauna, Sunlandic Twins and a couple of tracks from Skeletal.
Enjoy the gig and tell us more about it when you get back !!

It was absolutely GREAT! No FFF, but didn't miss it. *shrugs* 4 songs off Hissing Fauna, I think.
Kevin Barnes was absolutely glowing the whole time with, what appeared to be sincere, jubilation! That was so nice to see. :) The band was huge and full of energy.
I'm still floating on air from the experience. Best Of Montreal show I've seen.
YAY!!!

My husband took some pictures.

Barnes has really become quite a performer. I was totally sucked-in with his "You make my dreams come true.", "Something's going to happen tonight." and "This is the best day of my life." He exuded jubilation. So gorgeous!

I KNEW I'd find one somewhere! I want to see them live so bad.. my parents did when I was like 9 xD I didn't care much for Skeletal Lamping. However I adore False Priest! Hydra Fancies gets stuck in my head sooo easily. Oh, and I saw someone liked The Past Is A Grotesque Animal - great song, innit? I feel like an oM snob xD It's just that they've always meant something to me cuz my family's known them so long, it reminds me of when I was little.

Ahah, yeah. My parents are actually why I like the music I do, they're pretty rad in the music category. They've been to a billion concerts, they always make sure to bring them up when I'm listening to music. I remember walking around the day of the OM concert near the venue with my parents (remember I was like 9) and there was a guy smoking a cigarette outside, and I laughed and said "It would be funny if he was in the band!" Sure enough the next day my dad showed me a pic of him (just in butterfly wings) on stage with a guitar xD

I listened to The Gay Parade album a few days ago at work.
It was...special. Made my day a lot more colorful.

Also this song is awesome. Would've been a hit back in the 80s

So, Paralytic Stalks was leaked, and no one is discussing the album's greatness?? What are your thoughts so far? I am in love! I am glad to see that Kevin has returned to his genius self again, and has abandoned whatever mentality he was in when he created False Priest. It's just great to have new material from a great band!

Same!! I love the album, I've been listening to it nonstop lately. It's very intricate and layered and has really gotten me more into of Montreal. The album seems to have abandoned that funk/groove that they had on their past albums, and as much as I loved that, it kind of got old quickly...

I haven't even heard it yet but I'm happy to see it's loved! I loved False Priest though xD oM got me so excited the other day because they said they needed someone for their street team in my city! I contacted then but apparently 30 seconds too late -.-

It's really good, a lot better, I think False Priest had some good ones but it couldn't really hold my attention throughout. This new album is so great. I've been playing 'Spiteful Intervention' on repeat.

I also love Spiteful Intervention! It is such a raw and capturing song. And, don't get me wrong, False Priest is not a horrid album. In comparison to most albums out there, it is fantastic! But, in comparison to other oM albums, it is lacking spirit and integrity. Kevin has said recently that it was his attempt to become more commercial and to bring them to the next level of success, an intent that is not at all apparent in Paralytic Stalks. PS just seems to be a more honest album. It is great! Glad you guys are digging it too!

LUCKY. Er, good shopper. A friends of mine got it and I didn't even know he liked of Montreal. If I had any money I'd buy it in a heartbeat xD

No written stuff. :( But it does come with a poster, a sticker, and a free download of the album. Plus, the packaging and the vinyl itself are stunning!

Nice!!
It's such a great album (and Kevin Barnes is SO under-recognized IMO). I wouldn't be surprised if the limited edition 1500 is worth something significant as a collector's item someday.

New album was refreshing.

Also, did anyone catch them live for this album's tour?
Definitely one of my favorite shows I've attended.

Saw them for the 4th time this past Saturday. I took a video of Spiteful Intervention:
https://www.youtube.com/v/taYKgA-44xI
Which also happens to be my first YT upload, yayyyy
I wanted to upload their new song with Rebecca Cash, but I filmed it sideways without thinking :/

I'm completely in love with them all over again. Their live shows will do that to you, I guess. Plus I got to meet Kevin Barnes again at their Saturday show and I'm convinced that he's just the nicest person ever. For someone who has a colorful mind and is crazy on stage, he's quite timid with fans but ridiculously kind. He gave me the biggest hug before and after our picture was taken and made me feel like I was the only one around when we were talking, even though that clearly wasn't the case. Needless to say I'm in love with a married man with child, that's new ;D

So now I'm just sulking in my PCD.
